In 1974, the governments of the city of Lexington and Fayette County, Kentucky, combined to create the current Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government, often abbreviated LFUCG. Lexington has an elected mayor and city council-style of government. The Chief Development Officer, in the Mayor’s office, is responsible for economic development in Lexington. The Mayor’s office works closely with Commerce Lexington’s economic development division, as well as the University of Kentucky’s Office of Commercialization and Economic Development, to promote and facilitate economic development efforts for the city.
